The Power of Personal Stories
What kind of posts..
- perform best,
- get the most reactions,
- grow your network meaningfully?
From numerous posts, it becomes evident that personal stories often resonate the most.
On the world’s top professional social media platform, should we not stay in the “professional lane” and avoid sharing our personal lives?
Furthermore,
- how do we define personal?
- how personal is too personal?
In the age of showing our vulnerabilities, how do we strike the right balance between
sharing enough and not too much?
Sometimes, I notice that even those who advocate for sharing personal stories have
either very few or repetitive personal stories on their own profiles or posts.
My question?
Is there data that reveals whether sharing personal stories on LinkedIn helps you gain
- trust,
- engagement, or
- a bigger audience?
As I reach day 57 of my 90-day challenge, here are 5 types of posts I come across most often:
1. The Humble Brag: Sharing your skills and successes without appearing boastful, striking a balance between pride and humility.
2. Progress Milestones: Sharing your number of followers, engagements, or impressions.
3. Career Milestones: Celebrating work anniversaries, promotions, or new directions, highlights your career and invites congratulations from your network.
4. Upcoming Events: Announcing product launches, webinars, or events to keep your network informed and engaged.
5. Industry Stories: Sharing industry insights with a personal touch to your professional persona that shows your values, lessons learned and growth.
▶ While the power of storytelling is encouraged,
sharing personal stories appears to be the riskiest.
